Roberto Mancini returns to the Italian national team's dugout. The coach, who won the European Championship in 2021, has been chosen by the FIGC to relaunch the Azzurri after recent difficult years and their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
For Mancini, it is a return three years after his departure in 2023, when he left the role after bringing Italy back to the top of Europe. At Wembley, against England, came the success on penalties which, to date, represents the highest point of his Azzurri experience.
Now the coach will have to rebuild a profoundly changed national team and give it back an identity after three consecutive missed World Cups.
Mancini's return is therefore also a gamble on memory: starting again with the European Championship coach to try and bring Italy back to the top of international football.
