Ligue 1’s 8th day broke a record

Yesterday evening ended the eighth day of Ligue 1, a day that went down in history as it was distinguished by the number of goals scored over the nine matches played.

Forty goals were scored in all the matches played. We are talking about the best result ever equalled since the league returned to 18 teams and certainly one of the most impressive of the 21st century.

This total exceeds by one goal that of the already prolific third day, played at the end of August, and, incredible but true, had only been reached on two occasions since 2000.

The first time had happened at the end of the 38th day of the 2007-2008 season (when the French league had 20 teams) and then on the 31st day of the 2023-2024 season.

The Ligue 1 version 2025-2026 confirms a very interesting competition from the point of view of offensive dynamism and entertainment for fans all over Europe.

Some matches particularly contributed to this impressive total of goals, such as the match played at the Vélodrome between Marseille-Le Havre, which ended 6-2, PSG-Strasbourg, which ended in a spectacular draw (3-3), as well as Lorient-Brest (3-3), certainly also the clash of titans in the south of France, Nice-OL (3-2) and finally also the lesson given by Toulouse to Metz (4-0).

This result places the eighth day of Ligue 1 2025/26 on the podium of the most prolific ever in the history of the 18-team league, behind the second day of 1964-1965 (45 goals) and the twelfth day of 1963-1964 (42 goals).

To hope to reach or break the all-time record, however, the clubs will have to work hard, as the total number of goals scored on a single day in Ligue 1 stands at 55, scored on the fifth day of the 1949-1950 season, a feat that remains difficult to replicate to this day.
