The 80th edition of the cycling tour started in Venaria Reale on 23 August
Historical prestige
In Venaria Reale, from where it left on Saturday 23 August the 80th edition of the Vuelta, the cycling tour of Spain, it has been confirmed by the organisers that the 2026 edition will start in the Principality of Monaco. The 2026 start was held in Porto Ercole on 22 August and will end in Spain, in Madrid, on 13 September, but the stage layout is still being studied and will be officially presented in October 2025. Witnessing this news was H.S.H. Prince Aberto II, who was in Piedmont and attended the starting ceremony, greeting the athletes, staff, and the entire “caravan” of this historic test of world cycling.
The Principality of Monaco's record
The Principality of Monaco with the Vuelta 2026 completes a record-breaking experience, as it can count in history the start of the three most important stage races in the world, after the 1966 Giro d'Italia and the 2009 Tour de France. Rumours have it that the route that the cyclists would have to cover for the most part would be that of the prestigious Formula One Grand Prix and could also be a time trial stage.
From 1966 to the present day
To return to the history of cycling, the first stage of the 1966 Giro d'Italia started from Monegasque territory to arrive at Diano Marina in Liguria and it was won by the “Camoscio d'Abruzzo” Guido Taccone of the epic “Salvarani” team. The first of the 2009 Tour de France was precisely a 12-kilometre time trial all within the Monegasque borders and it was won by the Swiss Fabian Cancellara, it was 4 July, while on 5 July, again from the Principality, it started to arrive in the French town of Brignoles and was won by the Briton Mark Cavendish, from the Isle of Man. From now on everyone watch out for this further prestigious sporting event for the Principality with the commitment of our newspaper, which will tell you all about the Vuelta 2026.
